Preliminary census says UTSA enrolled 28,520

(Sept. 18, 2006)--According to a preliminary count, enrollment at UTSA grew to a record 28,520 students for fall 2006, which is an increase of nearly 5 percent over the same time last year, with students representing 48 states and more than 90 countries.
UTSA President Ricardo Romo credits the record enrollment to increasing recognition of UTSA as an institution of first choice by a growing number of students.

RSS Feeds"UTSA continues to be a university of first choice as it also becomes one of the state's next premier research universities," said Romo. Since he became president in 1999, the university's enrollment has jumped 53 percent.
According to The Hispanic Outlook in Higher Education magazine's 2006 rankings, UTSA ranks No. 4 in the nation for Hispanic enrollment and No. 3 in the number of undergraduate degrees awarded to Hispanics. Additionally, nine individual programs ranked among the Top 10.
To accommodate increasing enrollments and achieve its vision to become a premier research university, UTSA has plans for $265 million in construction over the next four years.
UTSA recently received funding from the Texas Legislature for an $82 million building for the College of Engineering, where enrollment has grown more than 90 percent in six years. Additional construction projects include the new Laurel Village housing complex and expansions to the Recreation and Wellness Center and University Center.
In Texas, student enrollment figures at public higher education institutions are set on census day, Sept. 8 this year, and forwarded to the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board for review. Enrollment is one of several criteria used to determine the amount of state funding each institution receives to support its education mission.
