(Sept. 27, 2006)--More than 400 UTSA students, faculty and staff listened to remarks by Texas independent gubernatorial candidate Richard "Kinky" Friedman and former Minnesota Gov. Jesse Ventura on Sept. 25 at the University Center Retama Auditorium on the UTSA 1604 Campus. The event was hosted by the Graduate Political Science Association.

The singer, songwriter, columnist and novelist used UTSA as the venue to kick off his Texas college tour -- a trek that will take him to 20 other Texas colleges and universities in the next two weeks. The event was the first time Ventura officially stumped for the Texas candidate.

Friedman, who faces Republican incumbent Rick Perry, independent Carole Keeton Strayhorn, Democrat Chris Bell and Libertarian James Werner, spoke on issues facing the citizens of Texas, then took questions from the audience.

Ventura ran for office as an independent candidate for governor in Minnesota in 1998, narrowly winning the election over the Republican incumbent and a Democratic challenger.

The deadline for voter registration is 30 days before an election. The registration deadline for the Nov. 7 election is Oct. 10. Pick up a form to register to vote at any San Antonio Library branch or the UTSA Library reference desk at the 1604 Campus.
