By Tim Brownlee
Assistant Director of Public Affairs

(Oct. 13, 2006)--UTSA, MK-1 Construction and Gallista Gallery present the art exhibit, "Project MASA," through Oct. 25 at the Gallista Gallery, 1913 S. Flores St. The featured works use an "outer space" theme to comment on Latino issues such as immigration, discrimination, racism and alienation.

An opening reception, free and open to the public, is 6:30-9:30 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 14.

"Project MASA" (MeChicano Alliance of Space Artists) is an annual exhibit focusing on established and emerging Chicano artists. This year's exhibit showcases work by 45 artists selected from a national call for entries.

"These Latino artists are taking a stab at the idea of 'alien status' of a human," said Luis Valderas, a project founder. "They are asking, 'who is an alien?' and pondering other points of view. They poke fun at the absurdity of terminology and rhetoric in current events and pop culture."

The exhibit includes work by Arturo Almeida, UTSA art specialist, and Ricky Armendariz, UTSA assistant professor of art and art history.

Other featured artists are David Anaya, Andy Benavidez, Magda Bowen, Rolando Briseno, Jorge Cisneros, Jose Cosme, Sam Coronado, Viola Delgado, L.A. David, Enrique Fernandez-Cervantes, Carolina Flores, John Gallagher, Marie Garza, Xavier Garza, Angelica Gomez, Carlos Gomez, Quinton Gonzales, Ray Gonzales, Daniel Guerrero, Luis "Chispas" Guerrero, Jim Haught, Sergio Hernandez, Paul Karam, Joe Lopez, David Martinez, Jane Madrigal, Laura Molina, Mike Molina, Sandra Moreno, Felipe Reyes, Mary Agnes Rodriquez, David Rice, Alberto Ramirez, Rolando Reyes, Alex Rubio, Anna Lillia Salinas, Raul Servin, Victor Tello, Lawrence Trujillo, Luis Valderas, Felipe Vasquez, Perry Vasquez, Gabriel Quintero-Velasquez and David Zamora-Casa.
