Bonilla will announce $2.36 million in funding, which will be allotted over four years. As part of the new funding, $800,000 will expand TRIO programs. A TRIO alumnus, Bonilla has been instrumental in obtaining more than $17 million since 1990 for UTSA's TRIO and GEAR UP programs. Read more about the TRIO programs.
The federal TRIO program is an educational-opportunity outreach program to motivate and support secondary students from disadvantaged backgrounds in preparation for college.
More than 15,000 TRIO students have been served at UTSA since 1990 from high schools across South Texas. Research indicates that TRIO students are four times more likely to graduate from college than those not served by TRIO.
In addition to Bonilla, more that 250 TRIO students and their parents, high school principals and administrators from South Texas and representatives from the national TRIO office in Washington, D.C., will be on hand to celebrate the funding announcement.
