UTSA survey assesses mayor, police chief

(Nov. 120, 2006)--Through Dec. 9, the Southern Space Project will present an exhibit of paintings by Richard Martinez, UTSA assistant professor of art and art history, and local artist Estevan Arredondo.

Martinez' paintings combine modernist and baroque styles using various decorative elements to convey sensuality and a new type of visual language. In his paintings, he incorporates abstraction, color, texture and patterns in nature to evoke a cool, elegant distance found in the modernist style.

The baroque style, prominent from 1600 to 1750, uses light and shade, texture, dimension and geometric shapes in an ornate and dramatic manner.

Arredondo's paintings feature varying densities of pigment and high contrast to convey proportion and visual depth.
