Contractors cause Oct. 28 power outage

(Nov. 2, 2006)--The entire UTSA 1604 Campus lost power from 3:15 to 6:45 p.m., Friday, Oct. 28 because of a damaged power conduit.

Contractors working on the Thermal Energy Plant/Parking Garage project hit a power conduit creating high-voltage electrical surges that overwhelmed equipment.

A fuse was blown and an electrical short caused a CPS Energy breaker to shut down. The construction project is adjacent to the Multidisciplinary Studies and Science buildings on the 1604 Campus.

As designed, emergency generators transferred power to life-safety and other equipment requiring emergency power. As a result, critical university systems and equipment were operable until power was restored in all buildings.

UTSA Facilities Operations and CPS Energy employees restored power to some buildings within 45 minutes. All power was restored by 6:45 p.m.
