UTSA hosts Great American Smokeout Nov. 15-16

(Nov. 13, 2006)--UTSA Student Health Services, the Community Health class, the Office of Occupational Safety, the Pre-Med Society and the Student Health Advisory Committee will host free Great American Smokeout activities Nov. 15-16 for the UTSA community. The national event is in its 30th year of providing health information on tobacco.
The Great American Smokeout is an opportunity for smokers to quit tobacco for one day, and for the UTSA community to learn more about the hazards of smoking. Additionally, UTSA community members can sign petitions to endorse a smoke-free university or smoking in designated areas.

Pamphlets, bottled water and Quit Bags will be available from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 15 at the Downtown Campus Frio Street Building commons.
At the 1604 Campus, the event is set for 10 a.m.-3 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 16 at Sombrilla Plaza, the University Center breezeway (adjacent to the Humanities and Social Sciences Building) and at the entrances to other campus buildings.
Additionally, a smoking cessation class will be offered from 7 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 15 at Student Health Services, Recreation and Wellness Center Room 1.502. To reserve a seat, call (210) 458-6428.
According to the American Cancer Society, people who quit smoking, regardless of age, live longer than people who continue to smoke. An estimated 44.7 million adults are former smokers in the United States. At UTSA, an estimated six of 10 students choose not to smoke.
Among current smokers, 70 percent report they want to quit. Quitting smoking substantially decreases the risk of lung, laryngeal, esophageal, oral, pancreatic, bladder and cervical cancers. Quitting lowers the risk for major diseases including coronary heart disease and cardiovascular disease.
