UTSA women's basketball holds off Kent State, 69-62

(Jan. 4, 2007)--UTSA held off a late Kent State rally and three Roadrunners collected double-doubles in Saturday night's (Dec. 30) 69-62 victory in the final game of the 2006 Wells Fargo New Year's Classic.

UTSA won its third game in a row and improved to 4-8 on the season, while the Golden Flashes dropped to 4-7.

Sophomore Tia Bogan led the way with a team-high 16 points and 10 rebounds and recorded the first double-double of her career. Senior Vivian Ewalefo scored 12 points and grabbed a team-high 14 rebounds, while sophomore Monica Gibbs recorded her fourth double-double of the year with 13 points and a career-high 12 assists.

Freshman Lynsey Freeman tied her career-high with five 3-pointers and followed Friday's career effort with 15 points. Both she and Ewalefo were named to the All-Classic Team.

Jamilah Humes led the Golden Flashes with a game-high 17 points and La'Kia Stewart grabbed a game-high 16 rebounds.

After UTSA extended its lead to 54-39 with 13:43 left in the contest, Kent State went on a 21-7 run over the next 8:50 to pull within one at 61-60. The Roadrunners held strong and went on to score the eight of the final 10 points of the game to pick up their second victory of the weekend.

UTSA opened the first half with a 17-7 lead, as Bogan scored eight points. Lucie Luprichova's five straight points trimmed the Roadrunners' lead to 20-16 with 7:36 to go in the frame. A 9-1 run by UTSA pushed back its lead to double digits (29-17) with less than five minutes left until halftime. The Roadrunners closed out the half with another 7-0 run and took a 42-26 lead into the locker room.

The Roadrunners open Southland Conference play at Lamar on Saturday, Jan. 6. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
