(Feb. 14, 2007)--The UTSA Office of Information Technology (OIT) has announced an initiative to increase the level of information security at UTSA.
The multi-level program will include mandatory training for UTSA staff and faculty members. Training modules will be available Feb. 15. Faculty and staff will receive an e-mail with a link to the modules. Information security training for students will begin this summer.

Additionally, an enhanced security section is being developed on the OIT Web site. The site will include information on security threats, tips on how to protect data, technical information for users with administrative rights to computers, links to standards and policies, a list of OIT services and a Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) page.
John McGowan, UTSA chief information officer and associate vice provost, has established an information security "tiger team" to create a robust security program. Staff members from across the university were chosen to create a program to assist in preserving confidentiality, integrity and availability of the university's information resources.
Team members will be involved in security monitoring, infrastructure support, security program auditing and incident response. The team will help increase effectiveness in responding to information security threats.
Finally, OIT will sponsor a Security Awareness Day in October as part of National Cyber Security Awareness Month. Festivities will include guest speakers and other special events.
