ITC volunteers help make events successful

(Feb. 20, 2007)--The Asian Festival, which was Feb. 10 at UTSA's Institute of Texan Cultures, heralded the coming of the Year of the Boar. Much of this event's success stems from the efforts of UTSA volunteers who consistently step up to support ITC activities.

Among the steady corps of UTSA volunteers behind ITC events are Rich Barber, UTSA Police Department administrative associate; Gloria Fulton and Mana Wajarakorn, library assistants at the John Peace Library; and Terre Torres, administrative associate, and Velma Tristan, administrative services officer, both in the Office of the Vice Provost, Downtown Campus.

"We could not do the programs we do without the support of volunteers," said JoAnn Andera, Texas Folklife Festival director and Asian Festival coordinator at the ITC. "When UTSA staff, faculty or students volunteer for events it makes us a stronger family. Great individuals like Rich Barber, Terre and Hilario Torres, Gloria and Randy Fulton, and Mana Wajarakorn have volunteered for many of our events. They bring a knowledge and history to the event that is invaluable. We appreciate all they do in support of our events at ITC."

Velma Tristan has volunteered for the Texas Folklife Festival as far back as she can remember and has staffed the Asian Festival for the past four years. The UTSA volunteers braved a cold day and chilling winds to staff the soda and coffee booths and to sell commemorative festival t-shirts.

"I just love the festival," said Tristan. "I love the performances and the food. It's a fun family event."

Other volunteer support for the festival came from teams at IBC, Frost Bank, KCI, H-E-B, the UTSA student organization VOICES, West Campus High School, Reagan High School and Methodist Hospital.
