UTSA hosts March 19 panel on Israel in media

(March 16, 2007)--The UTSA Department of Communication will host a panel discussion, "Media in the Middle East and the Middle East in the Media," with panelists Jonathan Gurwitz, San Antonio Express-News columnist, and Gary Kenzer, director of Honest Reporting, speaking on the representation of Israel in the media.
Part of the course, International Communication, the discussion is at 3 p.m., Monday, March 19 in Business Building Room 3.04.06 at the 1604 Campus. It will be simulcast in Frio Street Building Room 2.506 at the Downtown Campus.

The panel presentation is the first of two on the role of the media in the Middle East and the Arab region. A second event is 3 p.m., Monday, March 26 at the same locations with Mansour El-Kikhia, UTSA associate professor and chair of the Department of Political Science and Geography, discussing the representation of Arabs in the media.

Bio: Jonathan Gurwitz
Jonathan Gurwitz is a native of San Antonio. He attended Alamo Heights High School and graduated from the Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. He earned a bachelor of science degree in foreign service with a concentration in international relations, law and organization. He is a member of Pi Sigma Alpha, the National Political Science Honor Society and the National Conference of Editorial Writers, for which he serves as chairman of its International Relations Committee.
He is a co-founder and twice served as director general of the Future Leaders of the Alliance program at NATO Headquarters in Brussels, Belgium. In 1986, he was placed on the Foreign Service Register of the U.S. State Department.
He is a columnist and member of the editorial board of the San Antonio-Express-News. His weekly columns on politics, social issues and international affairs are distributed internationally by the Hearst News Service and the New York Times News Service, and appear in major newspapers across the United States and around the world. He is a frequent contributor to the Wall Street Journal.

Gary Kenzer, the newest addition to the Honest Reporting team, is the new national USA executive director with more than 25 years experience in the nonprofit industry.
Honest Reporting is an international nonprofit dedicated to fairness and accuracy in reporting news about Israel. Heavily relying on volunteers, the organization has more than 140,000 online subscribers and provides educational tools and resources to anyone wishing to advocate for Israel.
For the last 9 years, Kenzer was executive director of Magen David Adom USA and with Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), both grassroots organizations in the United States. He has lectured at local, national and international conferences, and is a frequent visitor to Israel.
