UTSA institute reprises popular law-prep academy

By Richard Gambitta
UTSA Associate Professor and Director of the Institute for Law and Public Affairs

(March 6, 2007)--The UTSA Institute for Law and Public Affairs is accepting applications for the 2007 UTSA Summer Law School Preparation Academy (SLSPA). The application submission deadline is March 20.

The lauded SLSPA is a premier pre-law program designed to increase the number of Texas students who gain admission to and excel in quality law schools. SLSPA students have been accepted into more than 50 law schools across the country. If you are interested in attending law school, this program is for you.

SLSPA offers a variety of rigorous undergraduate courses to prepare students for law school and the LSAT. In partnership with the University of Texas School of Law, award-winning UTSA faculty members teach seminars that attempt to hone students' analytical, critical-reading and writing skills.

SLSPA students attend presentations by law school deans and directors of admissions from every law school in Texas and many others across the country. Experts discuss ways to build a successful law school application and how to write a personal statement, apply for scholarships and secure financial aid.

Distinguished law school professors present seminars for SLSPA students to illuminate the substance and culture of law school classes. The institute confers the UTSA Certificate in Legal Reasoning upon students who complete 12 hours of designated coursework.

Normally, students apply at the end of their sophomore year, taking the SLSPA's two phases across two summers, but the program can be completed in one summer under special circumstances. Enrollment is by admission only. Stipends are awarded to the majority of students admitted to the program.

Application submission:

  • Download the SLSPA application.
  • Submit applications by e-mail to Anthony Arriaga, ILPA program coordinator, by fax at (210) 458-2993 or in person at designated offices listed on the application form (Downtown and 1604 campuses).

For more information, call Anthony Arriaga at (210) 458-2992 or Richard Gambitta at (210) 458-5608.
