UTSA community invited to United to Serve event

By Tim Brownlee
Assistant Director of Public Affairs

(April 11, 2007)--UTSA will host a volunteer service day, United to Serve, on Saturday, April 14. United to Serve is open to UTSA students, faculty, staff and their families who want to give back to the community by volunteering at various agencies in the San Antonio area.

United to Serve is an excellent tie-in with the recently announced "Your Time Counts at UTSA" program in conjunction with UT Service and Civic Participation Program. In this program, UTSA participants logging 100, 250 and 500 hours of volunteer service in a 12-month period will be eligible for bronze, silver and gold award levels with lapel pins and personalized letters of thanks from President George W. Bush.

The civic participation program is a way for individual efforts to be recognized, along with the collective community impact of UTSA and the UT System. Read more about the UT Service and Civic Participation Program and learn how to record volunteer hours.

"We are pleased to participate in United to Serve and the UT Service and Civic Participation Program," said UTSA President Ricardo Romo. "The two complementary programs will allow UTSA students, faculty and staff to give back to the community and to be recognized for their hard work as volunteers. Your time counts, and I look forward to thanking and honoring those who volunteer and inspire others to serve."

For United to Serve on April 14, various shifts are available, and online registration is required. To register, go to the UTSA Volunteer Service Web site, where you will be directed to a sign-up page with the list of projects. Click on the project in which you are interested; on each project page there are directions and a map to the volunteer site for the agency you choose.

At the registration page, students must fill out the Release and Indemnification Agreement for Adult Students and any additional forms required by an agency. Print out the forms and bring them April 14 to the event at the site indicated for the agency you choose on the Web site. At the event, check in with the UTSA project leader. On Saturday, everyone participating will receive a UTSA United to Serve t-shirt.
