Commencement Close-Up: Robert Garcia

(May 24, 2007)--Robert Garcia graduated May 12 from the UTSA College of Business with a bachelor's degree in accounting, but he wasn't always as dedicated and successful as his is now.

Garcia is a recent recipient of the Sol Schwartz and Associates P.C. Accounting Scholarship Award. A member of the Honors College and a College of Business senator in the Student Government Association, he was very involved on campus during his time at UTSA.

High school was a struggle. In 2000, he graduated a year late from John Jay High School after dropping out for one semester. A run-in with the law and then a second chance from a notoriously tough judge, however, set him back on the right track and he returned to school determined to succeed. Before coming to UTSA, Garcia studied at Northwest Vista College.

The unfortunate death of his brother from a drug overdose did not shake Garcia's commitment to his education. Although it was difficult for him and his family to cope with losing someone so close to them, he remained determined to succeed, and act as an example and source of help for his family and others.

At UTSA, Garcia has been an exceptional example of the sort of students UTSA is fostering as it moves toward premier research status. He was named in 2007 to Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities, and served as a UTSA Ambassador. He also is a member of Beta Alpha Psi, an honorary accounting fraternity.

His plans include obtaining an M.B.A. and eventually earning certification as an accountant.
