(July 26, 2007)--Home to the UTSA basketball and volleyball teams since the 1980s, the Convocation Center on the 1604 Campus is getting a seating makeover during the next two months. By the beginning of October, the Convo will be home to more than 4,000 new chair-back seats.

The old bleachers on both the lower and upper levels currently are being removed by Alpha Building Corporation of San Antonio, which also will construct the covered storage and permanent seating in each corner of the lower level.
The new lower-level seating will be in place in late August, with the upper seating installation completion date set for late September. Hussey Seating Company of North Berwick, Maine, is providing the telescopic seating, while Specialty Supply and Installation Company of Conroe is installing the new seating with a total project cost of $2,049,373.
Built in 1975, the Convo features a permanent maple hardwood court that measures 17,900 square feet and a new seating capacity of 4,080. In addition to UTSA basketball and volleyball contests, it has hosted a multitude of special events, including commencement ceremonies for UTSA and local high schools, the 2004 Nike Hoops Summit, the 2002 WBCA All-Star Game, the 1998 NORCECA World Volleyball Championships and the 1993 United States Olympic Festival Volleyball Tournament.
Check back in the coming months for updates on the progress of the new bleacher installation.
