(Aug. 9, 2007)--Katie (Poindexter) Kelley was named women's assistant track and field coach, head coach James Blackwood announced Aug. 1. She will oversee the cross country and distance programs and her appointment is effective immediately.

Kelly comes to UTSA from Terrell High School, near Dallas, where she was a teacher and a volunteer coach. Before her tenure at Terrell, she was a graduate assistant coach at Texas Tech while working on her master's degree in physical therapy.

"We are extremely excited about having Katie come on board," Blackwood said. "She was a phenomenal student-athlete for UTSA and it's always nice to hire someone already familiar with the program and the area. She brings a tremendous wealth of distance running knowledge and is a perfect fit for us."

One of the top middle distance runners to ever don a UTSA uniform, Kelley won the Southland Conference (SLC) Indoor 800 meters crown in 2003, qualified for the 800m finals at the 2003 NCAA Indoor Championships and was a member of the conference champion indoor distance medley relay team in 2002. She still holds UTSA records in the indoor 800m (2:06.05), indoor mile (4:50.73) and outdoor 800m (2:05.00).

Kelley also ran on the record-setting 4x800m relay, which won the 2002 Texas Relays title with an 8:42.19 clocking. She was a cross-country standout, finishing a career-best 11th at the 2001 SLC Championships. Kelley also competed in the 1,500m finals at the 2002 USA Outdoor Championships and the 800m semifinals at the 2003 USA Outdoor Championships.

Also an accomplished student, Kelley earned her bachelor's degree in biology from UTSA in 2003. She was the 2003 SLC Women's Indoor Track & Field Student-Athlete of the Year and a three-time member of the SLC All-Academic Team.

"I'm very excited about this opportunity," Kelley said. "I've always wanted to be back in San Antonio. I have been looking forward to this for a long time. I always told (former cross country coach) Rose Monday 'if you ever need someone to help with the program, I'm always available.' She called me earlier this summer and told me she was leaving and I couldn't believe it. I didn't think it would happen this quickly."

A native of Seymour, Texas, she is married to Elliot Kelley and the couple has one daughter, Ellie (14 months).

UTSA kicks off the 2007 season at the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Relay on Aug. 31 in Corpus Christi.
