Art department hosts Sept 19 video screening

(Sept. 18, 2007)--The UTSA Department of Art and Art History will present the second of four fall video screenings from 7 to 9 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 19 in the Durango Building Southwest Room (1.124) at the Downtown Campus. As part of this semester's video art class, the short-film screenings are free and open to the public.
With a portrait theme, the screening will focus on hybrid media, or video that is out-of-the-box and off-the-screen. The video style often incorporates installation sculpture and performance.

The screening will include a video diary by UTSA student Steven Carter, "Diario de Barcelona," which was created in Spain during last spring's "mini-mester." The graduate student in printmaking was accompanied on the study-abroad tour by other art graduate students, Professor Judith Sobre and Assistant Professor Leslie Raymond.
"Diario de Barcelona," a three-minute digital video, depicts the artist's pinhole photography process from the consumption of packaged foods to the building of cameras from those packages to the photographic exposures and images created.
"These screenings grow out of a combination of my teaching and a desire to reach out to the local art communities," said Raymond. "They are programmed specifically for my classes, but then screened at the Downtown Campus and open to the public. My upper-division art video students are embarking on video self-portrait projects. In the video and new-media courses that I teach, I am always striving to make connections with the bigger picture of the history of fine-arts practice, and this is a good subject to do it with."
The "Portrait" screenings will include an early work by William Wegman along with "El Mundo L.A." (1992) by Harry Gamboa Jr., "House: After 5 Years of Living" (c. 1955) by Charles and Ray Eames, "In Order Not to Be Here" (2002) by Deborah Stratmen, "Crowdog" (1984/1998) by Vanessa Renwick, "Exquisite Corpse" (1978) by Earnest Gusella, "Nadja in Paris" (1964) by Eric Rohmer, "The Movie Movie (Excerpt): Donald Trump, Business Man" (c. 2005) by Errol Morris, "If Every Girl Had a Diary" (1990) by Sadie Benning, "Media" (1980) by Zbig Rybczynski and "A Painful Glimpse Into My Writing Process" (2005) by Chel White.
Upcoming screening presentations are "Expanded Cinema/Hybrid Video," Wednesday, Oct. 10, and "Indy Media," Monday, Nov. 5, presented by Tish Stringer from Houston with screenings of works from her collection.
