UTSA Satellite Space hosts 'Fabrication,' Oct. 4-21

By Tim Brownlee
Assistant Director of Public Affairs

(Oct. 1, 2007)--The UTSA Department of Art and Art History and the UTSA Satellite Space present the exhibit, "Fabrication," Oct. 4-21, in Blue Star Arts Complex Suite 115 at S. Alamo and Probandt streets. Curated by Cornelia White Swann, the exhibit features textile works of Candace Briceño, Vanessa Garcia and Jenny Hart that show the traditions of sewing in nontraditional ways.

An opening reception, free and open to the public, is 6-9 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 4. The gallery also will be open 6-9 p.m., Oct. 5 for First Friday, the monthly Southtown gallery open house. Regular gallery hours are noon-6 p.m., Friday-Sunday, or by appointment.

In "Fabrication," the three females artists use the domestic skill in ways that go beyond the expected uses of stitching. While evoking memories associated with sewing, each artist uses needle and thread to explore worlds of imagined landscapes, domesticity and popular culture.

Candace Briceño (Austin) evokes the beauty of landscapes or "painting sculptures" through sensual, tactile surfaces with materials such as hand-dyed felt.

UTSA undergraduate student Vanessa Garcia (Boerne) explores her family history (her mother and father are professional tailors) in installations that hint at the process and raw materials of the trade while investigating issues of domesticity, life cycles and culture.

Jenny Hart (Austin) uses embroidered portraits of celebrities, friends and pop cultural icons to rebel against the traditional themes of bunnies and bonnets often associated with the labor-intensive needlework process.
