UTSA art exhibit features wax-pigment paintings

By Scott Sherer
Gallery Director and Assistant Professor of Art and Art History

(Nov. 7, 2007)--The UTSA Department of Art and Art History will present the exhibit, "The Divas and Iron Chefs of Encaustic," through Dec. 2 in the Arts Building gallery on the 1604 Campus.

Curated by Reni Gower of Virginia Commonwealth University, the exhibit features contemporary encaustic paintings from eight artists representing Canada and the Midwest, Southeast and Northeast regions of the United States.

Made from pigment, melted beeswax and resin, encaustic paint is fixed with heat after it is applied to the canvas. While an ancient technique, the exhibition highlights the diversity of hot-wax painting, produced in a detailed, sensuous style with exquisite beauty.

The featured artists include Kristy Deetz, Peter Dykhuis, Lorraine Glessner, Cheryl Goldsleger, Reni Gower, Heather Harvey, Jeffrey Hirst and Timothy McDowell.

  • An opening reception is 6-8 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 7. Free parking is available in lot 8 during the reception.
  • Curator Reni Gower will speak on "Contemporary Encaustic Painting" from 11 a.m. to noon, Thursday, Nov. 8 in Arts Building Room 3.01.18A on the 1604 Campus.
  • A demonstration of hot-wax painting is 3-4:30 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 8 in Arts Building Room 2.02.24, 1604 Campus.
