Homecoming art contest winners announced

By John Kaulfus
Associate Dean of Students

(Jan. 23, 2008)--Winners of the UTSA Homecoming 2008 art contest were announced Jan. 14 in the University Center galleria on the 1604 Campus. The first-place design will be used on posters and other promotional materials for this year's homecoming celebration.

Jannette Monteith claimed first place with her submission, "UTSA All the Way." David Taylor was awarded second place for his entry, "UTSA Homecoming 2008." Third place was awarded to Kristopher Garcia for his design, "UTSA Truly Defined."

Each artist received a trophy and a cash prize -- $250 for first place, $50 for second place and $25 for third place. The first-place submission will be auctioned at the Alumni Gala in support of student scholarships. The second- and third-place submissions will be displayed at the University Center.

Jannette Monteith is a senior studying art and interior design with a focus in drawing. She has published drawings in The Independent online newsletter and the student newspaper, Paisano. Last fall, she donated several works to the Art for Africa charity auction sponsored by Student UNICEF. She plans to pursue a master of fine arts degree at UTSA.

An artist and photographer from Washington, D.C., David Taylor now lives in San Antonio and works in both traditional and digital media. He is a junior and a member of the Omicron Delta Kappa honor society. His success as an amateur photographer includes representation in exhibits at the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of Natural History and the Kathleen Ewing Gallery in Washington, D. C., as well as publication in Nature's Best magazine.

Kristopher Garcia is a sophomore communications major from Eagle Pass. A full-time student, he also works in the College of Engineering Advising Center. Garcia loves photography and "taking photos of life in all its randomness."
