UTSA offers accelerated teacher certification

(March 4, 2008)--The UTSA College of Education and Human Development and the Academy for Teacher Excellence offers teacher certification through the Accelerated Teacher Education Program (A-TEP). Recent college graduates, mid-career professionals and retired military personnel who want to earn teaching certification are encouraged to attend an information session.

Information sessions are held the second and fourth Thursday each month at the UTSA Downtown Campus. A-TEP offers certification in science, mathematics, and special education. There is a high need for qualified, effective teachers in each certification area.
A-TEP is an accelerated transition-to-teaching program offering academic and professional development with paid internships and the opportunity to complete a master's degree. On completion of course work, professional development and passing the state certification exams (TExES), participants can apply for a standard teaching certificate issued by the Texas Board of Educator Certification.
Benefits of A-TEP include a stipend of up to $4,000 to help pay for program-related tuition and fees and a lending library for selected textbooks. In return, there is a commitment to teaching in one of A-TEP's partner school districts.
The A-TEP team includes Belinda Bustos Flores (principal investigator, associate professor of interdisciplinary learning and teaching, and Faculty Fellow, Office of the Vice Provost for Accountability and Institutional Effectiveness), Elizabeth Pate (co-principal investigator and professor and chair of the Department of Interdisciplinary Learning and Teaching), Margaret Flores (co-principal investigator and assistant professor of interdisciplinary learning and teaching) and Betty Travis (co-principal investigator and professor of mathematics).
