Conference to show how to do business with China

(March 17, 2008)--The UTSA Institute for Economic Development and the International Trade Center will host the Business China Executive Training Program, a series of workshops for entrepreneurs and business professionals who want practical information from Chinese companies on opening trade relations overseas.

As part of San Antonio's growing role in international trade and commerce, the workshops will be presented four consecutive Tuesdays from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., March 25-April 15. The presentations will be in the Durango Building Southwest Room (1.124) at the UTSA Downtown Campus, 501 W. Durango Blvd., San Antonio, Texas, 78207.

The series will feature 22 workshops led by Chinese executives including "Understanding China" by Grace Chen, chairman and CEO of Oceansoft International; "Marketing in China" by Yan Yan of the Outdoor Sign Company; and "Chinese Legal Issues" by Tom Tong of Tong & Sung PC.

Other companies represented will include JPMorgan, UPS, Tindall & Foster immigration lawyers, Fulbright & Jaworski international law firm and AX Enterprises Inc., a Microsoft certified partner.

The Business China program builds on UTSA's long-standing relationship with Taiwanese entrepreneur Richard Liu, founder of the leather supply company, Superior Holding Ltd. In 1998, Liu established the U. S.-China Business Education Initiative in UTSA's College of Business.

The Liu family will bring a number of Chinese business professionals to each training module with case studies on negotiating with Chinese suppliers, developing Chinese marking programs, moving goods to and from China, and financing Chinese business ventures.

The first module, Modern Business Management in the People's Republic of China, is Mar. 25. The session will offer information on Chinese culture, business practices, the role of government in the business sector and how to navigate business risks. Other topics include sourcing products from China, product feasibility, locating vendors, negotiation techniques, pricing and quality control.

The second module, Marketing in the Middle Kingdom is April 1. The presentations will provide tools and resources for companies wanting to develop a Chinese export marketing plan and includes information on identifying market opportunities, understanding market segments, analyzing distribution channels and developing sales strategies.

The third module, Supply Chain and Logistics in the People's Republic of China, is April 8. The session will provide tools and information to reduce risk, improve efficiency and increase profits for companies sourcing goods from China and managing complex export operations.

The final module, Trade Finance and Payment Methods in the People's Republic of China, is April 15. The session will provide details on negotiating and securing payment terms, understanding the foreign exchange risk and financing foreign business ventures. Tools provided will help reduce costs, decrease instances of non-payment and increase profit margins.

Continuing support is available through the International Trade Center at UTSA's Institute for Economic Development. The International Trade Center provides free, one-on-one trade consulting and market research, thanks to grants from the Small Business Administration.

The Business China Executive Training Program is an excellent opportunity to prepare for the National Association of Small Business International Trade Educators (NASBITE) Certified Global Business Professional (CGBP) exam. Conference attendees can attend a separate session May 29 for an exam review. The NASBITE CGBP is the only professional credential for international trade executives in the United States and is the benchmark for competence in global trade.

Registration for the Business China Executive Training Conference is $800, which includes all four modules and a Chinese-style business lunch at each session.
