Dennis served as FCC commissioner under President Ronald Reagan and special counsel for an international law firm based in Washington, D.C. She joined SBC Communications (now AT&T) in 1995 and was named chair of Girl Scouts USA in 2006.
Co-sponsored by the accounting firm Carneiro, Chumney & Co. LC, which provides accounting services to nonprofits, the event is based on the theme, "Giving Back Change to the World," and will celebrate the accomplishments of its graduates and students who serve the community through volunteering and internships with nonprofits. Program participants have worked with San Antonio nonprofits as well as national and international organizations.
"The recognition reception is a great way to say thank you to the nonprofits in the community that offer volunteer and internship opportunities so that students can gain real-world experience in nonprofit management," said Alison Johnson, president of the American Humanics Student Association. "It also lets the community know that American Humanics graduates have both the academic background and job experience to take on the responsibilities at a nonprofit."
This year, the American Humanics program will graduate four seniors, and nearly 30 undergraduates will continue in the program next year.
Entertainment at the reception will be provided by the San Antonio National Poetry Slam Team, hosts of the weekly ¡Puro Slam! events at Sam's Burger Joint and winners of the 2000 National Poetry Slam competition.
American Humanics (AH) is a national nonprofit management certification program offered by 70 colleges and universities across the nation. UTSA is one of only three universities in Texas offering AH certification for undergraduates, and the only one in the state to offer the AH certificate to graduate students.
