(April 8, 2008)--The UTSA College of Architecture will present a lecture by Canary Islander and internationally acclaimed architect Fernando Menis as part of the college's weekly colloquium. The event is 6 p.m., Tuesday, April 8 in the Buena Vista Street Building Aula Canaria (1.328) at the UTSA Downtown Campus. The lecture is free and open to the public.

Menis designed the Magma Arts and Conventions facility in Tenerife, Canary Islands, the athletics stadium of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the harbor at Santa Cruz de la Palma, the Cultural Center Las Maretas at Lanzarote and a number of housing complexes in the Canary Islands. After his talk at UTSA, Menis will conduct a presentation at Harvard University with other Canary Islands architects.

"Fernando Menis is one of the most creative architects currently practicing in Spain with an amazing ability to draw creative inspiration from the local traditions and culture," said Julius Gribou, UTSA executive vice provost. "His experimentation with materials and bold forms make his work highly dramatic and an integral part of the landscape."

Gribou met Menis on a goodwill tour of the Canary Islands while serving as dean of the UTSA College of Architecture.

UTSA, Friends of the Canary Islands Foundation and the City of San Antonio facilitate dialogue between academic institutions and industry experts from the United States and Europe, broadening perspectives and sharing ideas.
