(April 25, 2008)--The UTSA Prefreshman Engineering Program (PREP), a popular summer enrichment program in science, math, computer science and engineering, has extended its application deadline through April 30.

For 29 years, PREP has provided an academically intense, mathematics-related summer program that stresses the development of abstract reasoning and problem solving skills. UTSA program assistant mentors serve from the June 12 orientation session through Aug. 1, the end of the PREP term.

College students majoring in science, math, computer science and engineering, with a minimum 2.5 GPA can apply for program assistant mentor positions. Preferably, college students will have completed Calculus I and have experience working with adolescents. Mentors will attend classes and labs with the students, oversee student safety and behavior, supervise research and study periods, provide tutoring as necessary and in the role of a mentor, encourage the educational development of program participants.

The PREP core curriculum includes classes ranging from Logic and Its Applications, to Mathematics, to Introduction to Engineering for first-year students; Algebraic Structures and Introduction to Physics for second-year students; Technical Writing and Introduction to Probability and Statistics for third-year students; and Introduction to Computer Science and Water Science for fourth-year students. All PREP participants attend problem solving classes and career awareness seminars.

College students interested in program assistant mentor positions can download an application at prep-usa.org. Previous PREP participants and former PREP employees are encouraged to apply. The completed application packet should be mailed to: San Antonio PREP (Attn: PA Committee), The University of Texas at San Antonio, 501 W. Durango Blvd., San Antonio, TX 78207-4415.

For more information, contact the San Antonio PREP office at (210) 458-2060.
