UTSA policeman named local officer of year

(May 20, 2008)--Thomas Calucci, sergeant in the UTSA Police Department, was named Local Law Enforcement Officer of the Year at a ceremony hosted by the San Antonio chapter of the American Society for Industrial Security (ASIS).

"Congratulations to Sgt. Calucci for such a great accomplishment," said David Hernandez, chief of the UTSA Police Department. "It is the first time that a campus law enforcement officer has been selected for this award, which makes this even more special."

ASIS presents the awards at the local, state and national levels to recognize law enforcement officers for their accomplishments. Nominations for the local award came from UTSA, San Antonio Police Department, Converse Police Department, Saint Mary's University Police Department, Shavano Park Police Department, Live Oak Police Department and Bexar County Constable's Office, among others.

Calucci was nominated for his work in charge of the UTSA Police Department investigations section. According to Hernandez, Calucci's leadership and foresight have led to the successful investigation and conclusion of numerous critical cases. He has worked with partners such as UTSA Office of Judicial Affairs and Counseling Services, among other offices.

Calucci is responsible for developing the university's Behavioral Intervention Team, a critical tool utilized to identify and work with individuals indicating a potential for violent behavior. He currently serves as co-chair of the team.

Calucci is the recent recipient of the 2008 UTSA Extra Mile Award, a University Excellence Award honoring outstanding contributions, creativity and innovation. He received the award as a proactive and productive employee who frequently offers a helping hand and receives frequent praise from members of the UTSA community.

Born and raised in Buffalo, N.Y., Calucci attended State University of New York at Buffalo. He has been a police officer for nearly 14 years, both in New York and Texas. He has served at UTSA for nearly 8 years as a police officer and detective with the UTSAPD Criminal Investigations Division. He moved to Texas in 1992 and married his wife, Kathy Calucci, in 1993. They have a 10-year-old son and a five-year-old daughter.

Calucci has a master's peace officer license as well as certification as a mental health officer and for investigations of sexual assault and family violence. Additionally, he teaches classes in crisis intervention techniques and identity theft prevention.
