UTSA commencement ceremonies are May 8-11

(May 7, 2008)--More than 2,500 graduation candidates will walk the stage as UTSA celebrates three days of commencement ceremonies from Thursday, May 8 through Saturday, May 11 in the Convocation Center on the 1604 Campus. After Saturday's ceremonies, UTSA will have 77,000 alumni.

A total of 2,029 undergraduate students will participate in six ceremonies at the 1604 Campus with 499 graduate students and 29 doctoral students joining the procession.

>> The UTSA commencement ceremonies will be telecast live on Time Warner Cable Channel 98 and Grande Cable Channel 21 or on the Distance Learning and Academic Technology Web site.

Ceremonies begin at 6:30 p.m., Thursday, when 490 graduation candidates from the College of Education and Human Development earn their degrees. John Folks, superintendent of the Northside ISD, will be the evening's keynote speaker.

At 2 p.m., Friday, the Honors College ceremony will be in the Convocation Center. Honors College graduates represent students enrolled in all of the seven other colleges. These students are invited to participate in both the Honors College ceremony and again with their classmates in the ceremonies for their degree majors.

At 6:30 p.m., Friday, the College of Public Policy and the first section of the College of Liberal and Fine Arts graduation candidates will walk the stage. COLFA majors represented include anthropology, history, political science, geography, psychology and sociology. Keynote speaker Paula Owen, president and CEO of the Southwest School of Art and Craft, will address the degree candidates.

Ceremonies continue Saturday with three commencement exercises.

At 9 a.m., Saturday, May 10, the first section of candidates from the College of Business and the second section from the College of Liberal and Fine Arts will participate in the ceremony. Business majors include accounting, economics, finance, information systems and technology management, management science and statistics majors and Ph.D. candidates.

COLFA majors include art and art history, communication, English, classics, philosophy, modern languages and music. The featured speaker will be Yvonne Fernandez, assistant vice president of Security Service Federal Credit Union and president of the UTSA Alumni Association.

At the 1 p.m. ceremony, keynote speaker Bruce Leslie , chancellor of the Alamo Community College District, will address candidates from the College of Architecture and the College of Business second section. Business majors include the M.B.A. programs, management and marketing.

The final exercise of the day will be at 5 p.m., when Pedro Garza, regional director of the Southwestern region of the Economic Development Association, will address 506 candidates from the College of Engineering and the College of Sciences.

Free parking will be available in lot 5, adjacent to the Convocation Center as well as in the new South Parking Garage across from the visitor information booth on Edward Ximines Boulevard. Because of the closure of George Brackenridge Avenue, expect traffic delays before and after the ceremonies. George Brackenridge Avenue runs from UTSA Boulevard to UTSA parking lot 5 between University Oaks Apartments 2 and 3.
