Sponsored Programs offers new funding resource

By Noe Saldana
Director, Office of Sponsored Programs

(July 13, 2008)--The UTSA Office of Sponsored Programs announces a new automated service to aid in finding research funding resources. The new service, Community of Science (COS), replaces the Sponsored Programs Information Network (SPIN), which is being phased out.

COS is a Web-based service that will bring information to registrants' e-mail boxes once a week through keywords created in their profiles. COS also allows users to do on-the-spot manual searches.

Features of the new funding resource include:

  • Ability to search more than 24,000 records that contain almost 400,000 opportunities worth more than $33 billion
  • Ability to identify experts and collaborators in a range of fields of interest with information on current research activity, funding received, publications, patents, new positions and more
  • Ability to showcase research and expertise among researchers and scholars from universities, corporations and nonprofits in more than 170 countries.
  • Provides tools to keep a curriculum vitae updated and accessible by possible collaborators

COS workshops will be presented throughout the summer; see the schedule on the Office of the Vice President for Research Web site (select "My Research Portal"). A series of workshops also will be listed in the UTSA Training and Development newsletter this fall. Webcasts will be scheduled as well.

The SPIN database will be available for a short time, but no new accounts will be created. In the near future, SPIN will be removed from the Office of Sponsored Programs Web site.
