UTSA counseling programs earn accreditation

(Aug. 12, 2008)--The UTSA College of Education and Human Development graduate programs in counseling recently were granted accreditation by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP), the national accrediting arm of the American Counseling Association (ACA).

CACREP awarded an eight-year accreditation to the Department of Counseling master of arts degree in counseling with specializations in community counseling and school counseling, and its Ph.D. degree in counselor education and supervision.

"This is a huge milestone for our department -- it propels our programs to a national level," said Marcheta Evans, UTSA associate professor and chair of the Department of Counseling. "Obtaining accreditation affects the university, our faculty and ultimately the student. For a Ph.D student, it speaks volumes when being considered for employment. Accreditation will also help the department recruit top students."

CACREP representatives visited UTSA in June to meet with students, faculty, local agencies and San Antonio school districts in order to evaluate the program. "Accreditation was truly a community effort, and we couldn't have done it without the students, faculty, administration and all our partnering agencies," Evans said.

Since the creation in fall 2000 of the College of Education and Human Development and the Department of Counseling, the program has experienced significant growth. For fall 2008, nearly 300 will be enrolled in the master's program. The Ph.D. program in counselor education and supervision started in fall 2005 with eight students and has jumped to 31 for fall 2008. Ria Baker was the first graduate of the Ph.D. program in fall 2007.
