(Aug. 22, 2008)--A new page will be created in UTSA history with the Aug. 26 official opening of the University Center expansion, or UC III. The new facility began as a dream in 2003, when the students voted to create an expanded space for student activities and special events. The UC III grand opening celebration begins at 5 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 26 with a ceremony and unveiling of commemorative bricks on the paseo outside the main entrance. The events are free and open to the public.

UTSA President Ricardo Romo, Student Government Association President Christina Gomez, Vice President for Student Affairs Gage Paine and University Center Advisory Council Chair Raylene Lopez are scheduled to make remarks before the unveiling of the paseo bricks by Alumni Association President Yvonne Fernandez. Many bricks in the paseo are etched with the names of alumni and friends of the university who purchased them to support UTSA programs and scholarships.
Following the ceremony, there will be an open house with guided tours. There will be commemorative posters available and the building architects from Perkins and Will will be on hand to sign the posters. There will be refreshments and a limited number of t-shirts will be given away to mark the historic occasion, along with other commemorative giveaways especially for students.
Beginning at 7 p.m., salsa lessons will be provided by the Salsa Magic Dance Party and Light Show with lead instructor Lee Edward Smith and his dance partner. Smith has taught salsa dancing to more college students than anyone else in the world. Salsa Magic has performed around the world with a one-of-a-kind college-themed dance party recently featured on Fox Television's "Ambush Makeover."
Following the lessons, Washington, D.C.'s DJ Lee will continue the club party by lighting up the dance floor with the hottest and newest advanced technology and lighting, while spinning the best in Salsa, Merengue, Bachata, Reggaeton, Reggae, International, Hip Hop and Top 40.
The night will conclude with a showing of this summer's blockbuster movie, "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull." The movie will be shown outside in the green space behind UC III. Free popcorn will be provided.
