The photos by Ricardo Romo were taken on a visit to Veracruz, Mexico, considered to be the home of the "mother culture" of art in Mexico. According to Romo, many who visit Mexico gravitate to Veracruz because of the remarkable history of pre-Colombian art and the artisans who preserve it and adapt the styles in contemporary interpretations. His objective in the photography was to reflect the contemporary people and art dating back 500 years.
Luisa Wheeler, B.F.A. '01, M.F.A. '07, usually focuses on urban landscapes, but in this exhibit examines people in the Mattura region of India. In her work, she enhances or changes colors to reveal new perspectives.
Vanessa Centeno is a graduate of the San Francisco Art Institute. Her paintings use abstract textures, colors and shapes to evoke clothing, cosmetics and other mass-market, packaged consumer goods that become extensions of us giving feelings of status. Her goal is for the abstract forms to allow viewers to apply their own meanings to the works.
"I picked two artists from the recent 'Arte Latina: ROAR' exhibit to present their work with Dr. Romo's photographs because there is a good balance of styles," said Arturo Almeida, exhibit curator and curator of the UTSA Art Collection. "I think they complement each other visually and thematically."
