UTSA community invited to QEP focus groups

By Marianne McBride Lewis
Director of Public Affairs

(Sept. 12, 2008)--As UTSA continues work on the reaffirmation of accreditation with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges, students, faculty and staff are encouraged to attend focus group sessions Sept. 15-18 to learn about the three Quality Enhancement Plan proposals under consideration.

One of the three proposals will become part of the UTSA reaccreditation effort, and committee members are asking for direct feedback. (View the focus group schedule.)

The QEP is a new requirement in the SACS-COC reaccreditation process, described as a "carefully designed and focused course of action that addresses one or more critical issues related to enhancing student learning."

"We have had broad-based participation in the QEP session with 131 people attending to date," said Sandra Welch, UTSA vice provost for accountability and institutional effectiveness. "The attendees represent every college and vice presidential area, as well as students from freshmen through seniors. We strongly encourage the participation this week of those who have not attended a focus group. Participation from every group in the university community is essential in UTSA's reaccreditation process."

The three proposals under consideration are "Maximizing the Relevance of Graduate Education for Current and Prospective Students," "Quantitative Scholarship: From Literacy to Mastery" and "Service Learning: The Paseo to Lifelong Learning."

Those unable to attend the upcoming focus groups can view the latest proposal information, QEP drafts, PowerPoint and streaming video presentation for each of the three finalists on the QEP Pre-Proposal Finalist Web site. At the site, select "QEP Review Survey" to provide feedback on the proposals by answering three questions.

Get involved and help leadership guide UTSA toward premier public research university status. The deadline for QEP feedback is Friday, Sept. 19.
