UTSA prepares for State Employee Charitable Campaign 2008

(Sept. 25, 2008)--UTSA staff and faculty will prove their generosity once more during the 2008 State Employee Charitable Campaign (SECC), which runs Oct. 1-31. The annual workplace giving campaign for State of Texas employees, including state universities and colleges, benefits an extremely diverse group of charities and nonprofit organizations including organizations working directly to recover from the devastation wreaked by Hurricane Ike along the Texas coast.

UTSA participates in SECC with the coordination of donations managed by the United Way of San Antonio and Bexar County. Each UTSA employee will receive a donation packet, and once again this year UTSA staff and faculty will have the choice of contributing to the SECC through payroll deduction or through one-time gifts of checks or cash.

UTSA's campaign features many opportunities to learn about the people and agencies that benefit directly from campus donations. Watch UTSA Today and look for fliers that publicize these events in your office or department. The campaign will culminate in a reprise of "UTSA's Got Talent" on Oct. 24, featuring talent shows performed at the 1604 and Downtown campuses with simulcasts to both locations.

"I encourage everyone to open the donation directory and open your hearts to the great opportunity of giving to others. Giving to SECC is about the opportunity to give to what is important to you and making a difference as a community," said Kim Durham, assistant director of alumni relations and one of three chairs of this year?s campaign.

Also leading the campus effort is Jana Kennelly, associate director of development in the Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs, and Frances Riojas, assistant regional director of the Small Business Development Center.

Chances are, the SECC benefits you. How? If you?ve ever wondered what your connection is to the people and agencies of the State Employee Charitable Campaign, here are some questions you might ask.

Have you ever...

... received help from Red Cross after a disaster?
... hiked or camped in a Texas park?
... helped build a Habitat for Humanity house?
... known someone affected by family violence?
... known someone who received hospice care?

If so, then you have already experienced the generosity of charitable giving through programs such as the annual State Employee Charitable Campaign.

In 2007, 71 percent of UTSA employees contributed more than $225,000 to local, national and international nonprofit charities through the SECC. That figure represents the highest percentage of participation for any UT System institution. This year's goal is 73-percent participation.

Remember, it's not the amount you give that's important -- it's that you participate.
