UTSA observes Cybersecurity Awareness Month

By Alex Morones
Technical Writer and Editor, Office of Information Technology

(Oct. 17, 2008)--The UTSA Office of Information Technology's Information Security Office once again will host activities in support of Cybersecurity Awareness Month.

Observed in October, the event was created by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the National Cyber Security Alliance to increase awareness of information security issues. This is the second year that UTSA will participate.

"Realistically, we should always be concerned about information security, but this gives us a chance to reinforce good practices," said Homero Torres, UTSA assistant director of information security. "This is a great time for us to evaluate and improve our information security practices."

This year, the program focus is on four information security issues: phishing, MySpace/Facebook, password creation and PC safety. UTSA events will include a series of lectures by information security professionals, a specialized Web site and informational posters and bookmarks.
