Sweet! Eat free ice cream, learn about SECC

(Oct. 6, 2008)--The 2008 State Employee Charitable Campaign (SECC) kicks off Oct. 7-8 with four ice cream socials to provide a free, sweet treat to participants as they learn about the benefits of the annual charitable giving campaign. More than 500 local, national and international agencies participate in SECC, giving donors an incredible variety of organizations to support.

Each event will feature free frozen treats, known as "the best ice cream in the country" (courtesy of Bluebell Creameries) and a brief talk by representatives of organizations receiving funds through SECC.

"We want to put a face on the campaign," said Frances Riojas, one of three campaign chairs. "Staff and faculty are welcome to bring their printed giving forms to these events, which makes the donor eligible for door prizes." The door prizes include t-shirts, restaurant gift certificates and gas cards.

Online giving via the e-Way Web site also makes folks eligible for door prizes. (See the instructions on UTSA Today.) "Just bring a copy of your donation confirmation e-mail to the kick-off social," said Riojas.

The annual campaign, which opened Oct. 1, continues through Oct. 31. Last year, UTSA staff and faculty donated more than $220,000 to the campaign.

"The SECC would not be successful without the giving hearts of our faculty and staff," said UTSA President Ricardo Romo. "They understand that by pledging whatever amount they select, that pledge will go a long way in making a difference in someone's life."

In the coming weeks, UTSA Today stories will highlight some of the personal reasons staff and faculty are motivated to give through SECC.
