UTSA women's club soccer claims national bid

(Nov. 7, 2008)--The UTSA Women's Club Soccer team clinched a berth to the 2008 NCCS National Soccer Championships with their 2-1 victory over Texas Tech last Sunday. The team accomplished their feat at the Region IV South Tournament at the University of Texas at Austin the weekend of Oct. 31-Nov. 2. The national tournament will be Nov. 20-22 at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. It is the first time any club soccer team at UTSA has clinched a bid to the national tournament. The national bid game victory improved their overall record this year to 8-1-2.

The Women's Club Soccer team entered the regional as regular season champions in the Texas Collegiate Soccer League. They were placed in a pool with Rice University and the University of Texas at Austin. In pool play, UTSA defeated Rice 3-0 and tied Texas 0-0. UTSA won their pool by virtue of goal differential after Texas defeated Rice 3-1, earning them the right to face Texas Tech for the second time this year in one national bid game. Two national bids in the women's regional tournament were handed out. Baylor claimed the other national bid with their victory over Texas 1-0.
The 2008 season is the club's most successful to date. The team achieved home victories this year against Texas State, University of Texas-Pan American and Texas. They also defeated Stephen F. Austin State University, Sam Houston State University and Texas Tech University on the road. Their lone defeat of the season came at the hands of Texas A&M in College Station. Their lone regular season tie came at the hands of Baylor at home.
In its 15th year, the national tournament is part of the National Campus Championship Series (NCCS) and is organized by the National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association (NIRSA).
