Attorney to serve as UTSA public information officer

(Dec. 15, 2008)--Attorney John Danner joined the Office of Legal Affairs on Dec. 10, and he will assume additional duties Dec. 20 as the UTSA public information officer. As Public Information Act (PIA) requests increase, Danner's appointment highlights the significant and growing role of the management and handling of UTSA records.

His duties as a public information officer will include managing and coordinating record requests with officers and departments throughout the university. He also will be charged with developing ways to improve the processes related to these requests.

"I am delighted to have added an attorney with John's expertise and experience to my staff," said Liz Mitchell, UTSA chief legal officer and manager of the Office of Legal Affairs. "I believe that the UTSA community will quickly come to appreciate John's attitude of service and his dedication to making the handling of PIA requests at UTSA as efficient and painless as possible."

Danner is the fourth attorney to be hired in the UTSA Office of Legal Affairs. With a decade of civil and criminal litigation experience, he is an expert on the Public Information Act. For the last 3 1/2 years, Danner was one of only two attorneys who handled more than 1,500 PIA requests annually for the City of San Antonio. With the City, he also used his high expertise to assist with record retention matters and ethics-related issues.

Danner earned an undergraduate degree at the University of Texas at Austin and studied under U.S. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia at the Institute of World Legal Problems at the University of Innsbruck, Austria. Danner received a law degree from St. Mary's University School of Law.
