VOICES students
Students are ready for an Alternative Spring Break trip.

Alt Spring Break advisers, participants needed

(Jan. 23, 2009)--The student organization VOICES (Volunteer Organization Involving Community Education and Service) and the UTSA Inclusion and Community Engagement Center will host Alternate Spring Break trips to Piedras Negras, Mexico, and Corpus Christi, Texas. For both trips, students and staff advisers are needed.

The Piedras Negras trip will run Saturday, March 7 through Thursday, March 12. The trip will involve working with the children and improving the grounds at the Casa de Nazareth orphanage. UTSA has taken trips to this site for the last two years, and the participants and advisers highly recommended returning this spring. Participants and advisors will stay at a hotel near the Casa de Nazareth. Spanish speakers are encouraged to apply.

The Corpus Christi trip will run Sunday, March 8 through Thursday, March 12. The trip is a part of the Habitat for Humanity Collegiate Challenge. The UTSA team will help construct houses from early morning until 2:30 p.m., Monday-Thursday -- and then head to the beach or relaxing for the day in town. VOICES has participated in Habitat spring break programs in the past, and participants have reported great experiences. (Be ready to work hard!)

Advisers must be full-time staff members willing to drive a suburban or minivan, be over 21 years of age and attend two or three pre-trip meetings with Jennifer Lilly from the Inclusion and Community Engagement Center (scheduling is flexible). Advisers also must be willing to guide students through the reflection process during their experience. Each adviser will be provided with lodging and per diem compensation for meals. Both trips are still being finalized and are subject to cancellation.

Student applications are available at the Inclusion and Community Engagement Center Web site.

Staff members interested in the trips should contact Jennifer Lilly, Inclusion and Community Engagement Center, as soon as possible. The center hopes to have advisers in place by Feb. 1.
