Nearly 900 runners and walkers start Diploma Dash 2008.

(Jan. 9, 2009)--The UTSA Recreation Center is sponsoring a five-week training program to get you in shape for Diploma Dash 2008. Start training now for the 25th annual UTSA Alumni Diploma Dash 5K San Antonio City Championship Race and Fitness Walk on the 1604 Campus, Saturday, Feb. 21 at the 1604 Campus.

Race-day registration and stretching begin at 8 a.m. at the Convocation Center, and the starting gun fires at 9 a.m. Proceeds benefit the UTSA Alumni Scholarship Fund, UTSA track athletes, and alumni programs and services.
A host of community sponsors, alumni and UTSA volunteers promise a morning of exercise, great amenities and prizes. The racecourse offers a certified 5K flat course for accomplished runners and a scenic 1.5-mile course for walkers who prefer an easier pace. The race is computer chip timed, and families are welcome.
UTSA students, faculty, staff and alumni who are members of the UTSA Recreation Center can start training now. Abbi Lane and her staff at will talk and walk you through the five-week plan to get you in shape for both entry and intermediate levels. For more information, call (210) 458-6725. Medals and prizes will be awarded in open, masters and 13 age categories. Compete in the Corporate Team Challenge, UTSA Student Team Challenge or ROTC Challenge. Prizes will be awarded for record-breaking times, male and female. Special divisions include Clydesdale (male, 190 pounds and up) and Filly (female, 140 ponds and up), and new this year -- a wheelchair division with first, second and third place medals given to men and women.
Registration fees are $25 for individuals registering online by midnight, Wednesday, Feb. 18, and $35 on race day. UTSA students can register for $10 at the UTSA Office of Alumni Programs. Children ages 14 and younger are $10 and can participate in a special H-E-B Kids program. Each registrant receives a long-sleeved event t-shirt and "goodie" bag.
