UTSA Spotlight: Associate Professor Marcheta Evans named president of American Counseling Association

(Feb. 27, 2009)--Marcheta Evans, associate professor and chair of the Department of Counseling in the UTSA College of Education and Human Development (COEHD), has been selected to serve as president of the American Counseling Association (ACA), the world's largest counseling association with nearly 45,000 members. Evans will be named president-elect July 1, 2009; her term as ACA president begins July 1, 2010.

"To receive this international professional recognition goes beyond words," said Evans. "I am deeply honored and hope to have an impact on the profession I love so much."

Founded in 1952, ACA is a not-for-profit professional and educational organization dedicated to the growth and enhancement of the counseling profession. ACA exclusively represents professional counselors in various practice settings and provides leadership training, publications, continuing education opportunities and advocacy services to its members.

Additionally, ACA has helped counseling professionals develop their skills, expand their knowledge base, and set professional and ethical standards for the counseling profession.

As an accomplished author, co-author and presenter of more than 70 journal articles and presentations, Evans has served as president of the Association for Creativity in Counseling, chair of the ACA Southern Region and on a number of committees at the national and state level.

Her numerous honors include the Texas Association of Counseling and Supervision 2006 Counselor Educator of the Year Award, the South Texas Counseling Association 2005 Outstanding Public Relations Award and the UTSA 2004 President's Distinguished Service Award. Evans received her doctor of philosophy degree in counselor education and master of arts in education, master of arts and bachelor of science degrees from the University of Alabama.

The UTSA College of Education and Human Development is the leading provider of educators in the San Antonio area and one of the largest in Texas. It is ranked third in the United States as a producer of teacher education degrees for Hispanics. COEHD graduates are known for their strong preparation, and their success on state licensing exams puts UTSA in the top tier of institutional performance on accountability measures for Texas. The college offers six undergraduate, seven masters and four doctoral degrees.
