(Feb. 20, 2009)--The UTSA Department of Music and Vocal Power Productions will host an evening of Latin American and Spanish music and dance at 7:30 p.m., Monday, Feb. 23 in the UTSA Arts Building Recital Hall on the 1604 Campus. The event is free and open to the public.

Juanita Ulloa, music professor at Texas State University and Northwest Vista College, will perform both classical and folkloric songs from Spain and Latin America. Nicknamed the "High Priestess of Operachi," Ulloa will highlight the similarities and differences between Spanish art song, Zarzuela, Brazilian art song and Mexican mariachi music.

Ulloa, who has toured nationally and internationally, will perform music from her seven CDs and songbooks of Latin American music. Her latest CD, "Canta Mi Son!," is the world's first mariachi CD for children and families.

Additional performers will include piano faculty members Debbie McNeil and Ana Hakopyan, the Espana Viva flamenco dancers led by Beatriz Aguilar and Mariachi Nuevo San Antonio led by Jose Torres, UTSA mariachi director.
