(Feb. 2, 2009)--The University of Texas at San Antonio will present Brookings Institution scholar and UC Davis professor Wing Thye Woo speaking on "China's Transformation: Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow" from 2:30 to 4 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 4 in the University Center Hidalgo Room (2.214) on the UTSA 1604 Campus. The discussion is free and open to the public.
"Dr. Woo has a wealth of experience in Chinese, Indonesian and Malaysian economics, specializing in macroeconomics, exchange rate management, state enterprise restructuring, trade issues and financial sector development," said Don Lien, assistant vice president of the East Asia Initiative and UTSA Richard S. Liu Distinguished Chair in Business. "We are delighted to have him keynote our upcoming lecture."
Woo is the Global Economy and Development Program New Century Chair in Trade and International Economics at the Washington, D.C.-based Brookings Institution as well as a senior fellow in its John L. Thornton China Center, a key component of its foreign policy studies program. Additionally, he is director of the East Asia Program in the Columbia University Center on Globalization and its Sustainable Development.
Since 1994, Woo has led international teams to study and refine the economic policies of many Asian governments. His findings have been published in such reputed journals as American Economic Review and Asian Economic Papers as well as books such as "Economies in Transition: Comparing Asian and Europe" (MIT Press, 1997) and "The Asian Financial Crisis: Lessons for a Resilient Asia" (MIT Press, 2000). His nearly 30-year career also includes time as a United Nations Millennium Project consultant.
