(April 22, 2009)--More than 200 prospective graduate students from around the state met with graduate recruiters from Texas universities during the fourth annual Lone Star Graduate Diversity Colloquium, held March 27-28 on the UTSA Main Campus.

The event was established to encourage more Texans from under-represented populations to attend graduate school in Texas. The colloquium furthers the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board's Closing the Gaps initiative.

"We had a record number of recruiters attend this year," said Lisa Palacios, director of recruitment and retention for the UTSA Graduate School. More than 40 Texas universities sent representatives from graduate programs to the colloquium. This was the first year UTSA hosted the event.

The agenda included programs for both potential graduate students and graduate recruiters. For students, programs included funding graduate education, preparing for the GRE and creating a strong application; for recruiters, sessions included advice on developing and evaluating successful recruitment programs.

The colloquium received financial support from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, the Association of Texas Graduate Schools and UTSA's Office of the Provost and College of Sciences.
