(April 13, 2009)--The UTSA Honors College will present two lectures and a walk-through museum display with the theme "Never Again?" as part of Holocaust Remembrance Week. Free and open to the public, the events are to raise awareness of genocide around the world.
Sen. Robert Krueger will speak on "From Bloodshed to Hope: Genocide in Burundi" at 11 a.m., Wednesday, April 15 in Biotechnology, Sciences and Engineering Building Room 2.110 on the Main Campus. Krueger and his wife, Kathleen Krueger, witnessed genocide first-hand during his service as U.S. Ambassador to Burundi.
Krueger and his wife remain active in increasing awareness of genocide. "We should both value human life and justice as highly as we value oil or minerals," he said. "We are, after all, the longest-running democracy in the world and of them to whom much has been given much will be required."
Harry Mazal, founder of the Holocaust History Project, will speak at 11 a.m., Friday, April 17 in the University Center Bexar Room (1.102), Main Campus. Mazal is active in opposing those who deny the Holocaust. His approach is not to attack those who do not believe, but to provide information about the reality of the past.
Additionally, there will be a walk-through museum display, "The Wall," illustrating past and current genocide in five countries. The display will be at the University Center paseo on the Main Campus from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Wednesday, April 15 and Friday, April 17.
The events were planned and organized by students as part of an annual Honors College assignment.
