Lionel Maten hired as UTSA housing director

(April 20, 2009)--The UTSA Division of Student Affairs announces the appointment of Lionel Maten as director of housing and residence life. Maten emerged as the top candidate after a national search drew 150 applicants. He will come to UTSA from Oakland University in Rochester, Mich., where he is director of university housing. Previously, he was associate director of housing at both the University of Louisville and Carnegie Mellon University.

"We are very pleased to have someone of Lionel's caliber to lead Housing and Residence Life at this crucial juncture," said Kevin Price, UTSA associate vice president for student life and dean of students. "We are confident that Lionel has the vision, energy and leadership ability to take UTSA housing to the next level."

Maten will assume his UTSA duties June 8 and is looking forward to building key partnerships throughout the university. "I hope to engage the entire campus community in building a strong housing and residence life program that is aligned with the university's strategic plan, UTSA 2016," he said. "Our success will depend on strong cooperative relationships with campus stakeholders who share our interest in student success."

The university's implementation plan for UTSA 2016 calls for an expansion of "campus residential opportunities," and the director of housing and residence life will play a key role in this process. UTSA houses approximately 3,700 students on campus including 1,700 in Laurel Village and Chaparral Village, which are managed by the Office of Housing and Residence Life.
