(May 21, 2009)--The UTSA College of Education and Human Development will host a bilingual research education symposium from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Saturday, May 23 in Main Building Room 0.212 on the UTSA Main Campus. The event is free and open to the public.

At the symposium, "Working Together for English Language Learners Merging Theory with Practice," COEHD faculty, graduate students and recent doctoral students will share research on bilingual education and effective instructional practices for English learners.

"I think this is a great recruiting tool for UTSA, so area teachers can see what programs are available in education and for graduate degree options," said Mariela Rodriguez, UTSA assistant professor of educational leadership and policy studies. "Our main goal is for teachers, administrators and others who attend to participate in the academic discourse about what works for English learners in Texas."

The half-day event will feature 15 presenters discussing educational issues in three breakout sessions. Discussion topics will include Looking at Teachers and English Language Learners, Dual Language Education, Effective Leadership Practices for Bilingual Students and Latino Students in Higher Education.

The symposium is one of 12 proposals approved this spring as part of the UTSA Provost's Core Values Initiative. The initiative fosters UTSA's core values of integrity, excellence, inclusiveness, respect, collaboration and innovation.

Eligible to receive up to $1,500 in funding, proposals could include workshops, performances or programs highlighting any of the six characteristics listed in the initiative.

Faculty interested in the core values initiative for fall 2009 can submit proposals through their respective deans' and vice provost offices to Terry Wilson at (210) 458-4110. The deadline for fall 2009 proposals is Sept. 1.
