UTSA students learn art of music promotion with new group

(June 30, 2009)--If you're a student interested in learning the art of music promotion in San Antonio, then the UTSA Musicians Organization of Business (MOB) wants to hear from you. The MOB, currently comprised of 10 members, hopes to increase its membership and is open to all students regardless of their musical abilities.

Last spring, the organization promoted and hosted a battle-of-the-bands competition, inviting 15 bands from San Antonio and Austin to compete. The winner was the San Antonio-based band The Lytes.

"We really wanted to put on a good show and learn how to network and work on a professional level with people in the business responsible for music promotion," said Nick Garcia, UTSA senior and MOB member. "We learned first-hand, not by sitting in the classroom, but by talking with people who have been in the music business in San Antonio for years."

Local music instrument supplier Sam Ash Music stores donated $200 in cash and prizes and Krazy Kat Music provided the equipment for the preliminary and final rounds.

"I found out that working in the music business is a lot of hard work and takes up a lot of time," said Zach Keen, UTSA senior and MOB member. "I enjoyed making contacts and learning by getting a hands-on feel of what it takes to work in the music industry."

To judge the competition, the students recruited local radio personalities Kelley Kendall and Quinn from 99.5 KISS-FM to evaluate the performances.

"The activities of the MOB are great for teaching students interested in the music industry the nuts and bolts of how things get done and how to get started in this very competitive business," said Matthew Dunne, faculty adviser for MOB and coordinator of the UTSA music marketing program. "I was really happy with how the battle of the bands turned out, and I look forward to more great MOB events."

UTSA MOB members Nick Garcia, Zach Keen and Isaac Guajardo will graduate soon but before they leave UTSA, they want to pass on their knowledge to younger members so the organization can grow in membership and take on bigger projects in the years to come.
