Youth Orchestras of San Antonio members choose UTSA to continue training

(June 29, 2009)--For more than 30 years, Youth Orchestras of San Antonio (YOSA) has provided opportunities for top students to perform with their peers for the community. Over those three decades, the UTSA Department of Music also has benefited as many of the YOSA performers chose to continue their musical training at UTSA. Associate Professor Eugene Dowdy is one of the faculty members who has worked closely with the students.

From 1984 to 1993, Dowdy conducted the YOSA Youth Preparatory Orchestra and based his dissertation at the University of Iowa on the history of the organization.

"I've always loved that group because they are well run and successful as a nonprofit organization," said Dowdy. "They are a passionate group of individuals that reach out into the community so broadly."

According to Dowdy, approximately 25 percent of the 60 UTSA Orchestra students come through the YOSA program each year.

This fall, four YOSA members, Cesar Gonzales, John Mireles, Julian Tello Jr. and Tyler Valadez, will enroll in the UTSA music program.

"Tyler is literally one of the best bass players in the state of Texas, and he's staying here in San Antonio because there is a music department of high quality," said Dowdy. "We're very proud of that and the relationship is very strong between YOSA and UTSA."

In recognition of his efforts, YOSA awarded Dowdy the honorary title of resident conductor. As in the past, he is conducting at their camps this summer. Led by executive director Steven Payne, YOSA consists of five ensemble groups that rehearse every Sunday in the Arts Building Recital Hall at the UTSA Main Campus.
