(July 27, 2009)--Valero Volunteer University, a partnership in service involving UTSA student volunteers and Valero Energy employees, recently wrapped up a second successful year. One hundred twenty-three UTSA students participated this year and contributed a total 1,040 hours of volunteer work for a variety of events and causes, alongside Valero employees. Two students and one organization were awarded for their service.

The winners are:

  • Rachel Delucia -- $1,200 scholarship
  • Casandra Minjarez -- $800 scholarship
  • VOICES (student organization) -- $500 toward a future project

"We're thrilled and fortunate to have such a dedicated group of UTSA volunteers giving back to their community," said Gus Villarreal, Valero volunteer program coordinator and UTSA alumnus. "UTSA students are definitely committed to academic excellence and civic-mindedness."

The Valero Volunteer University will begin its third year this fall. For more information, visit the Valero Volunteer University Web site or contact Jennifer Lilly at (210) 458-4770 or in University Center Room 1.216 on the UTSA Main Campus.
