(Sept. 29, 2009)--The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board has approved a master of arts degree in school psychology in the UTSA College of Education and Human Development. The graduate program will provide the academic and practical training necessary to become a licensed specialist in school psychology authorized by the Texas State Board of Examiners of Psychologists.

School psychologists work with children and adolescents experiencing a wide range of academic, emotional and behavioral difficulties. Common roles and functions of the school psychologist include psychological assessment, counseling, consultation, crisis intervention, research and program evaluation. The program will include coursework and field-based experiences related to assessment, intervention, learning, development, psychopathology, research, statistics and professional issues.

"The UTSA School Psychology program has great potential to contribute to the educational success and mental health of children in San Antonio and surrounding communities by providing rigorous training experiences and producing high-quality graduates," said Jeremy Sullivan, UTSA assistant professor and graduate adviser of record for the new master's program. "The program also will provide excellent opportunities for UTSA students and faculty to build partnerships with local school districts and community agencies."

The Department of Labor has identified school psychology as a specialization that is likely to have faster-than-average employment growth. Additionally, Texas has been identified as a state that will encounter one of the most serious shortages of school psychologists in the near future, and minority and bilingual school psychologists are especially needed, given the increasing diversity of public schools. The new UTSA is part of the response to these needs at both the local and national levels.

Pending approval by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, the School Psychology program will begin in fall 2010. A primary goal of the program will be to secure approval by the National Association of School Psychologists in order to make program graduates competitive at the national level.

The School Psychology program will be housed in the Department of Educational Psychology, which is part of the UTSA College of Education and Human Development. The department is in Durango Building Room 4.322 at the UTSA Downtown Campus.

For more information about the program, e-mail Jeremy Sullivan.

The UTSA College of Education and Human Development is the leading provider of educators in the San Antonio area and one of the largest in Texas. Ranked third in the Unites States as producer of teacher-education degrees for Hispanics, the college is responsible for innovative research and grants in professional development, technology enhancement, health, school readiness, and bi-national and bicultural issues.
